Macs are very user-friendly and highly-performed devices with a great design and optimization. But even Apple production can slow down over time if you do not regularly clean up the storage space. Do you know what files take the most space on your MacBook? The quickest way would be to use built-in utilities or such tools as MacFly Pro which constantly monitors the system for appearing junk files. But it can also be made manually. It can be anything starting from backups and logs to remnant data and everything in between. The interesting fact is that deleting is not always necessary as the problem might be in Spotlight indexing which fails to provide you with correct information about storage space on your Mac.

You can check it the following way:

  1. Go to System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy
  2. Then, press + button and add your drive to the folders list prevented from indexing.
  3. Reboot the device and get back to Spotlight settings: this time, delete your drive from the privacy list. It will launch the program and it may slow down the system until the process is completed.
  4. After completion, you will get a more accurate updated info about your storage space.
  5. Press quit button.

Other Files

Other files storage is probably the most confusing option. Apple explains it as the files that Mac cannot recognize as belonging to any other category. Obviously, this is not clear enough. Here we can mention different plug-ins, archives, extensions, Windows Boot Camp partitions, files within disk images, etc. They can be classified with the help of the Storage Management tool but unfortunately, it cannot clean these files up.

If you do it manually, it is effective but very time-consuming. How to get rid of time to clean your Mac? Purgeable Storage

When you enable the option Optimize Storage you will see something called Purgeable Storage. It means that when your Mac starts slowing down on free disk, it will automatically start removing watched iTunes TV series and movies. Our advice is not to enable the option Store in iCloud unless you are ready to pay for at least 200 gigabytes of storage plan. If all you have got is 5GB of space, you will get into the iCloud storage. In other words, this is automatically available storage.

Please note that purgeable files may be downloaded again on your request. There is actually no need to learn tips on cleaning purgeable storage on Mac: it is usually done automatically.
